CalibWizard
CalibWizard is a program that is capable of automatically calibrate microscopic simulation models under a rigorous statistical framework. The internal optimization problem is non-smooth, non-convex difficult Non-deterministic Polynomial (NP) hard problem. However, CalibWizard treats such problem from a new perspective, viz, as a high-dimension nonlinear-regression problem, and uses iterative gradient searching method, plus unlimited multi-starts, to search for optimal parameters.

Serially correlated errors in the time series are explicitly modeled instead of simply assuming them to be zero-mean white noise. Finally, the optimized parameters prove to be maximum likelihood estimator while confidence interval of each parameters are also rigorously computed. The author believes the proposed framework, in conjunction with its high-performance implementation, is the first of its kind in traffic engineering/micro-simulation literature, thus move the state-of-the-art steps forward.

This program has been used to calibrate the model I developed in order to replicate freeway rear-end collisions. With calibrated parameters, the model has successfully replicate the real-life freeway rear-end collisions we captured during June ~Aug 2007 period.
